Independent artist Dawn Richard gained exposure when she appeared on Sean Diddy Combs's Making The Band 3. In 2005 Diddy formed the band Danity Kane with Dawn as a key member. In spite of some reasonable success they disbanded in 2009. Dawn went on to be a memeber of Dirty Money another one of Diddy's girl bands; disbanding in 2012. Dawn would then set out as an independent solo artist. Leveling up and creating her own wave. We sat down with Dawn to speak with her about the space she is in now.
STYLE: Who is DAWN today?
DAWN: The Unconventional Pop Artist. A black girl breaking ceilings in pop culture and doing it all Unsigned/ Independently.
STYLE: What would your life be relative to music?
DAWN: It will be a soundtrack, scored by Hans Zimmer.
STYLE: What has been your experience as an indie artist?
DAWN: There is more freedom but, less opportunities. I'm hoping to change all that But I’m here to change that..... especially for women.
STYLE: Speaking of independence. How do you resist the influence of conformity in exchange for more opportunity?
DAWN: With middle fingers and handy cuss words.
STYLE: What keeps you inspired?
DAWN: I want to leave a legacy behind. I want women like me to feel they have opportunities. I didn't have many examples to look at in tech, and fashion, and in pop culture. I’d like to show young girls you don’t have to be the stereotype. You can be who you are and exist in all spaces. I'm inspired by dance, I draw and design. I have to take at least a few dance technique classes a week to stay polished. I have to draw or design daily to keep my art game up. Tech is always changing so I like to know what’s evolving around me and how I can apply that to my art.
STYLE: what is on your playlist currently?
DAWN: My new album. I’ve been in the lab so haven’t been listening to anyone else lately.
STYLE: Do you feel social media helps you as an indie artist ?
DAWN: Social Media is what you make it. I choose to use it as a tool to touch my movement, to hear their stories, to share my art. For me, it works amazing. But that’s because I’m not using it for fame. I’m using it to push a platform of Indie artists including myself. it’s my business.
STYLE: Does it compare to reality TV stardom?
DAWN: Nothing quite compares to that. lol.
STYLE: Do you feel that personal style is empowering?
DAWN: Yes.. it's a language all on its own. You can communicate your aura with style. Style is a form of art and self expression.
STYLE: What are you communicating with your style? What are you telling us about Dawn?
DAWN: I am who I am, take it or leave it. I do what i like and I’m not one to follow rules.
STYLE: Who are your style influences? Tank Girl, Akira have influenced me a lot.
STYLE: Who is your favorite designer? What do you love about them?
