I am Brittni Mealy a Detroit native, raised in Atlanta. A fashion enthusiast and entrepreneur uer. I own a brand called Unicorn Universe (www.theunicornuniverse.com). I also curate my lifestyle app The Life Of Brittni (available on apple and android).
STYLE: I feel like dreamers love mystical creatures. I love mermaids... and unicorns too. But, why did you choose unicorns as your brand image?
BRITTNI: I fell in love with them. They have been my vibe for a while now. I even have one tattooed on my finger. This was before they were trendy. They have a uniqueness about them a sense of individuality. A lot like myself, like I'll wear pink hair and not care what anyone thinks. I like to think that I inspire people to try new things; step out of their comfort zone. People love that kind of energy. Imagine putting a unicorn in a room full of horses. I promise no one is paying attention to the horses LOL!
STYLE: How did you know you wanted to be an entrepreneur?
BRITTNI: I can remember as early as grade school. I started selling candy and by high school my mom's house became the "candy lady" except it was me selling the candy LOL! I mean I was a go-getter from the start. In high school I was on the year book committee. I would ask to have students excused so that they could take year book pictures. I would charge them 10.00 to take the picture and use the school's printer to print them. LOL!
STYLE: Now that's a hustler's spirit!! LOL! But, how did you get into selling online?
BRITTNI: Well, in 2012 I created an online store selling costume jewelry. It was called Pop Of Junk, it became very successful. I was a first time business owner with no investors grossing about 30k a month. I had one awesome assistant, it was great. However, I got distracted with personal life and I wasn't attending to the business like I should have, I wasn't growing the business. The industry became over saturated. I didn't want to be just another online boutique, I have more to offer than that. I took a step back to reinvent.
Now at 30 I'm a mompreneur ( a self -employed mother) some may find that challenging but, I embrace it. I was a teen mom so I have experience in managing time and getting things done. I try and take care of all my pertinent business needs during school hours. But, my oldest child in grade school like to helps. He gets his laptop out and actual helps me a lot.
STYLE: What advice would you like to give to those wanting to create a business?
BRITTNI:I'm not super big on giving advice because I don't have it all figured out myself. However, what I have learned is to always always make your customer #1. You need to create the best customer service no matter what! I learned the hard way. If people have a bad experience they can ruin your reputation. Word of mouth is real and you can lose out on countless potential customers. At the end of the day the customers are who keeps the business going they need to come first and they need to have a positive experience.
Lastly you can't wait for the perfect starting point. Don't allow lack of resources stop you. There will never be a perfect time to start, start with what you have and do what you can with what you have now.
Brittni's "It" List
STYLE: What items from your collection do you feel would make our "It" List?
BRITTNI:Definitely the body suit I'm wearing in the feature. It's a relaxed look but, the high shoulder pads screams "Im still a unicorn!!!" nothing basic about it. I also launch an Olive pajama set that is another personal favorite. "It" list worthy.
STYLE: What items are on your "It" list for Fall/Winter?
1. The YSL Nikki boot (which I'm Wearing in the feature photo) I prefer the calf leather over the suede. I love the soft smooth feeling. Suede doesn't always look fresh and polished they don't wear as well overtime. At this price point they are an investment piece. I want them to keep that luster.
2. I am falling for leisure suits and jogging suits. I just think its a summer relaxed look that you can play around with and make it your own.
3. Oversized blazers by Saint Laurent and Balenciaga. I love the masculinity in the shoulder details.
4. Coat dresses, I love the versatility of the look. Changing out the belt can totally switch the vibe.
5. Balenciaga Triple S are a statement. They are a little intimidating, you have to really know how to pull them together. I'm totally up for that challenge.
